Fig. 17.8: Rare example of an Urartian mountain-dweller who wears a heavy-looking coat which opens outwards near the hem to reveal a fringed skirt. The coat from waist downwards is also fringed. He wears pointed, high boots, typical of those worn by mountain dwellers.

Fig. 17.9: Statuette of Teisheba, god of war. Bronze. Karmir Blur (British Museum, London). The god wears a bell-shaped crown upon his head, on the top of which a horizontal hole has been devised so that the statuette might be hung on the wall of its votary’s home. He has a pair of horns, representing power and wisdom. Over the short-sleeved ceremonial dress, he wears a decorated, possibly brocaded, coat, hanging over one shoulder only, and fringed around all the edges, the hem as well as the wide sash falling from left shoulder to right hip. This describes a garment also worn by high-placed personages both in Urartu and Assyria. In his hands Teisheba holds symbols of power. Note typical Urartian stylised geometrical decorative motif around the crown.
